How many skeins of one color do you need? Enter the number of stitches in that color (your pattern key usually lists it).

–to buy (rounded up)

This is an estimate. A standard DMC skein is 8 m (8.7 yd) of six strands. How far it goes depends on how tightly you stitch, how you travel between stitches and how long your tails are. We plan with about 1,100 full stitches per skein on 14-count with two strands, the low end of the usual range, so you're less likely to run short. Buy one extra skein of your main colors, because dye lots can vary.

Why fabric count and strands matter

Bigger stitches use more thread. On 11-count each stitch is larger than on 18-count, so a skein covers fewer stitches. Using three strands instead of two uses half as much again.

The pattern maker works out stitch counts and skeins for every color in your design automatically. For more on threads, read the DMC thread guide.
